Replacing Knob-and-Tube Wiring in an Older Pittsburgh Home

Knob-and-tube wiring shows up in a lot of pre-1950 Pittsburgh and South Hills homes — and it tends to surface mid-renovation, behind the plaster. What K&T is, why insurers and inspectors flag it, why it gets replaced rather than patched, and how rewiring folds into a larger project when the walls are already open.

Quick Take: Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring is the original electrical system in a great many pre-1950 Pittsburgh homes — the 1920s four-squares in Squirrel Hill, the Tudors and colonials in Mt. Lebanon, the older streets across the South Hills. It worked for its era, but it has no ground, it doesn't tolerate modern loads or insulation, and insurers and inspectors flag it routinely. When it turns up, it almost always gets replaced rather than patched — and the cheapest time to do that is during a renovation, when the walls are already open. Almost every whole-home renovation we take on in an older neighborhood eventually involves the same conversation. A crew opens a junction box or a wall cavity, and there it is: a ceramic knob, a porcelain tube through a joist, and two cloth-wrapped copper conductors running separately through the framing. Knob-and-tube. It's one of the most common things we find behind the plaster in pre-war Pittsburgh, and one of the most misunderstood. Here's the honest version of what it is and what to do about it.

What knob-and-tube wiring actually is

K&T was the standard residential wiring method from roughly the 1880s into the 1940s. Instead of the bundled, jacketed cable used today, it runs a hot wire and a neutral wire as two separate conductors, held away from the framing by ceramic knobs and passed through joists and studs inside protective porcelain tubes. The air gap around each wire was the insulation strategy of the day, and in a dry, undisturbed, lightly loaded house it can sit there for decades without incident.

The problem isn't that it was bad work. Much of it was careful work. The problem is that the house it was built for no longer exists. A 1925 home was wired for a few lamps and a radio, not a kitchen full of appliances, a couple of window units, a home office, and a panel's worth of modern circuits. And three things about K&T age badly:

  • No ground. K&T is a two-wire system with no equipment grounding conductor, so it can't safely serve the three-prong outlets and GFCI/AFCI protection a modern home expects.
  • Brittle insulation. The original cloth-and-rubber insulation hardens and cracks with age and heat, especially near fixtures and at splices — exactly where failures start.
  • It can't breathe under insulation. K&T was designed to shed heat into open air. When a later owner blows insulation into the walls or attic — as nearly everyone eventually does for comfort and energy bills — the wiring loses its cooling, and that's a recognized fire risk. Many jurisdictions and electrical codes restrict burying active K&T in insulation for exactly this reason.

Why it's so common in older Pittsburgh homes

Pittsburgh's older neighborhoods were largely built out in the streetcar era, and a lot of that housing stock predates modern wiring. The brick four-squares in Squirrel Hill, the character homes across Mt. Lebanon, and plenty of the pre-1950 stock around the South Hills came up during or before the K&T era. Some of those homes have been fully rewired over the decades; many have been partially rewired, with new circuits added in the obvious places and original K&T left feeding lights and outlets in the rooms nobody touched. It's that partial, mixed-vintage wiring that we find most often — a panel that looks updated, with a century-old system still live behind the plaster upstairs.

There's a Pittsburgh-specific wrinkle that makes all of this more involved here than in a newer suburb: plaster-and-lath walls. Older homes here aren't drywall. Running new wire means working around — or carefully through — solid plaster over wood lath, which is slower and messier to open and to patch than drywall. That reality is a big part of why rewiring is so much easier to absorb when a renovation already has the walls open.

Why insurers and inspectors flag it

Two groups care about K&T well before you do. Home inspectors note it on nearly every report when they find it, because it's an aging two-wire system without a ground — a legitimate thing for a buyer to know about. And insurers increasingly treat active knob-and-tube as a risk: some will decline to write a policy on a home with live K&T, some require it be removed within a set window, and some price it into the premium. None of that means the house is unsafe to stand in tonight. It means the system is past its service life and the people underwriting the risk know it.

This is also why K&T comes up so sharply at sale time. A buyer's inspection turns it up, the buyer's lender or insurer asks about it, and suddenly a quiet system behind the walls becomes a negotiating point. Dealing with it on your own schedule — ideally as part of a renovation you were going to do anyway — is almost always less stressful and less expensive than dealing with it under a closing deadline.

Why it's replaced, not patched

The instinct is to splice in, extend a circuit, and move on. With K&T, that's usually the wrong call. The insulation is brittle, the system has no ground to tie new work into, and modern cable doesn't marry cleanly to old conductors without proper junctions. Patching tends to create a hybrid that satisfies neither code nor an inspector, and it leaves the underlying liabilities — no ground, aged insulation, no tolerance for insulation or load — fully in place. The honest recommendation, almost every time, is to replace the K&T in the affected area with modern grounded circuits run back to the panel, rather than nurse the old system along.

How it's discovered — and why a reno is the right time

You rarely go looking for K&T; it shows up during the discovery phase of a project. We open junction boxes, pull a section of plaster, or trace a circuit during the early walk-through and assessment, and the old system reveals itself. That timing is actually the good news. The single biggest cost in any rewire is access — getting to the wires without destroying finished walls and then putting those walls back. On a renovation, the walls are already coming open and getting refinished as part of the scope. Rewiring rides along on access you're already paying for.

Common questions
